Do It Yourself Home Energy Audits Or Inspections

Hey Itchy,

The wife is pestering me to get this house more energy efficient. I really can't afford to have a energy audit. Got any ideas?

Jason T.

You can check your home yourself to determine if you have any problems with saving energy. While your weatherization requirements will vary depending on what neck of the woods you live in the links below will point you in the right direction. Hopefully when you've finished your home energy inspection all will be well. If your results indicate you'll need to add more insulation and will need to break out the check book than I would say it would be ok to do a little cussing before you get started. What, you've never cussed out an under insulated attic? Well there is a first time everything!

For the most accurate results you may eventually decide to hire a professional home energy auditor. Here are some of the areas you'll need to check out when you are performing your do it yourself home energy audit:

* Air Leaks

* Lighting

* Insulation (This will be a fun one!)

* Heating and Cooling Equipment

* Appliances

OK. Ready to get started?
